Self Teaching

Self teaching can be a very cost effective and fun, however if you approach the task of learning a language half-heartedly it simply won’t happen. Dedication to the task and patience is the key to success. One of our multilingual staff here at british essentials has told us their learning schedule was at least 1 and a ½ hours a day learning the language they chose, so of course this is what we recommend to you all as well!

Well how do you do this you ask? One of the best ways is through immersion. In your new home country you should attempt to surround yourself with the language.

Things such as watching the local news and television programs, listening to the radio and listening to friends conversations in the native language.

How to Learn a Language by Attending a Course:

If you go down the route of a language course, make sure you research the school/teacher very carefully before making a decision, as selecting the course that is right for you could mean the difference between success and failure.

1) If you have basic language ability already and the school offers to test you in order to determine your level make sure that an appropriate test is administered. Many schools test their student’s abilities via multiple choice tests and these are not very effective in establishing real language learning ability, if you have a basic knowledge of the language and grammar then you can guess a lot of the answers. While may be flattering but in the long run will not help advance your learning in the language. The best schools will conduct oral and written tests to determine your real level of learning.

2) Once you’ve picked the right school for yourself,  make sure you have  a planned and organized learning schedule . In addition to this, a syllabus can help you to prepare for classes in advance and get the most out of the time you spend in the school.

3) always question the school about their teaching methods and the types of learning experiences you will get.  There's nothing wrong with asking what you will be getting in these schools so you can utilize different teaching methods; you will quickly grow bored if you simply repeat phrases parrot style with your teacher.
